What was your role and involvement with Pioneers of Change?

I was the older guy - in my 50s - who had walked along similar pathways in my 20s and 30s and was honored to be able to accompany the pioneers!

What has your journey been since your time with Pioneers of Change?

You're now around the age I was when all this began. One of my many joys is seeing how you accompany your Youngers. Doing this, we come alongside, sometimes breaking trail, sometimes following, other times walking side-by-side. That has been the nature of my life, joining hands across the generations because we can, we must, and because it brings great joy. I have continued to work with people and communities across the globe and in North America supporting them as they Re-Story for a Regenerative Futures. I'm likely know most for my work in Japan after the Triple Disasters of March 11, 2011 and my book about that experience - AfterNow: When We Cannot See the Future, Where Do We Begin? At 75 I continue the intergenerational journey and am now the Co-Director of NewStories.org, which I founded in 2000, serving along side Zanette Johnson, an amazing woman in her late 40's.

What values, lessons, or experiences from Pioneers of Change have stayed with you?

First and foremost, you are my tribe. I have strong memories of so many faces. For some reason, now, I recall a dinner in Zimbabwe during Maaianne's 30th birthday party. I was at a table with Alok and Zaid. I was trying to "keep up." You know, prove that I was as smart as they were and could hold up my end of an intense, complicated conversation. One of those voices of spirit that come from time to time whispered "you don't need to keep up. you don't need to prove anything. just enjoy and listen and make a contribution or ask a question when it is really time." For more than 20 years now, I have lifted up the simple and profound principles of Pioneers. They are so solid. I have continued to have close friendships and partnerships with many Pioneers. I made it to Mille's, then Colleen's and finally Maaianne's weddings. Pioneers has sculpted my life.

What advice would you give to today’s young changemakers as they navigate their own paths?

Just go back to the PoC Principles. Stay connected. Use joy as your North Star. Remember the offering from Angie Arrien, a Basque Shaman and Antropologist: Stay Present | Speak the Truth Without Blame or Judgment | Listen For What Has Heart and Meaning | Be Open To Outcome, Not Controlling of Outcome.
